The Paris Olympics have set social media alight, amassing over 1.3 million posts on TikTok, marking a staggering 1,828% increase compared to the Tokyo Games. The surge in engagement underscores the platform’s growing influence in the sporting world.
According to TikTok’s figures released on August 7, the hashtag #Olympics alone saw 233,440 creators sharing content, an 822% rise from Tokyo. The hashtag #Paris2024 also made waves with over 526,700 posts. Among the standout stars were Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen, affectionately known as Muffin Man, and U.S. pommel horse competitor Stephen Nedoroscik. Christiansen’s passion for chocolate muffins became a viral sensation, amassing 83 million views. Nedoroscik’s initial viral moment came after winning bronze and drawing comparisons to Clark Kent.
Rollo Goldstaub, TikTok’s global head of sports partnerships, highlighted the platform’s role in shaping trends, noting how viral phenomena like “muffin man” and Simone Biles’ medal bite began on TikTok.
At a celebratory event at Team GB House, Natasha Bedingfield and Cat Burns delivered electrifying performances. Bedingfield’s “Unwritten,” re-emerging as a TikTok favorite, joined Spotify’s Billions club, while Burns performed her hit “Go.”
Looking ahead, Goldstaub expressed excitement for future events, including the Winter Olympics in Milan and the 2028 Los Angeles Games, hinting at star-studded moments such as Tom Cruise’s anticipated appearance for the L.A. handover.
