Former national teammates David Warner and Matthew Wade have clashed physically in a fiery Big Bash League encounter between the Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes. The Hurricanes chased down their 136-run target with 23 balls to spare and five wickets in hand at Blundstone Arena on Sunday to leapfrog the Thunder into fifth spot.

Tim David finished unbeaten on 76 from 41 balls his highest BBL score with six sixes, after quick Nathan Ellis earlier picked up a career-best 4-27 including a hat-trick, which spanned 11 overs. However, Wade and Thunder counterpart Chris Green shared some words at the halfway point of the Hurricanes’ chase. Green was seen pointing fun at Wade for almost being run out and Wade did not take the jibe very well, with the two captains going at it during the drinks break.

Then, as the players returned to the middle, Warner was seen shoving Wade with his forearm, with the wicketkeeper looking far from impressed. Kerry O’Keefe said on Fox Sports: ‘That was inappropriate. I don’t know what went on between that pair.

‘Their history goes back a long way as buddies. It’s unsavoury. You can’t have contact like that. ‘Whether they were half joking, I don’t know. Their body language suggested not. There was an issue out there.’

After the game, the two captains clarified what had gone on during the game. ‘There was nothing untoward about it. We’re both passionate and competitive on the field and trying to gain a win for our teams. There was nothing personal said,’ Green said.

‘We were both playing with a lot of emotion, trying to lead our respective teams. ‘We had a chat after the game. We move forward. If we end up playing (again) I’m sure we’ll be as competitive as ever. If it happens again, great. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

‘I walk away with no ill feeling.’ David, who was in the middle at the time, said Green was winding up Wade about a potential run out. ‘Wadey bit back. It wasn’t a great deal more than that,’ he said.Wade told broadcaster Channel 7 that things were alright between the pair. ‘I couldn’t hit him, that was more my main frustration,’ Wade joked.
