Japanese Auteur Returns With Futuristic Family Drama
Neon, the U.S. distribution company behind acclaimed indie films, has acquired Hirokazu Kore-eda’s upcoming film, Sheep in the Box, for theatrical release in the United States, as well as distribution in the U.K. and Australia. This marks another collaboration between Neon and the Japanese director following his 2022 feature, Broker.
What ‘Sheep in the Box’ is About
Currently in production, Sheep in the Box stars Haruka Ayase and Daigo. Set in the near future, the film tells the story of a couple who introduce a state-of-the-art humanoid into their home, raising it as their own son.
The title is inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic 1943 children’s book, The Little Prince, and the story explores profound questions about technology, humanity, and family.
Kore-eda’s Vision Behind the Film
Hirokazu Kore-eda has described the film as inspired by the intersection of human emotions and technological innovation:
“This project began with the idea of ‘bringing the dead back to life using the latest technology.’ Similar concepts have appeared on Japanese television and garnered attention, but I wanted to explore the conflicting perspectives between technological advancement and human inner values,” Kore-eda said.
He was also influenced by the rise of “resurrection businesses” in China, where technology is used to simulate deceased loved ones, sparking questions about ethics, grief, and the limits of science. Kore-eda notes that with technology advancing rapidly, such realities could arrive sooner than imagined—even in Japan.
The Cast: Returning Collaborators and New Faces
- Haruka Ayase, who previously worked with Kore-eda in Our Little Sister (2015), returns in a lead role.
- Daigo, a popular Japanese comedian, makes his feature film debut.
The pairing promises a mix of emotional depth and fresh energy, bridging Kore-eda’s signature humanistic storytelling with futuristic concepts.
Production and Distribution
Sheep in the Box is produced by major Japanese studios including Fuji Television Network, Gaga Corporation, Toho, and AOI Pro. Gaga Corporation, alongside Goodfellas, manages international sales and negotiated Neon’s acquisition through Sarah Colvin.
Neon will handle the film’s theatrical release across the U.S., while also overseeing distribution in the U.K. and Australia, giving the film a global platform for international audiences.
Why This Film Matters
Kore-eda is celebrated for his sensitive, human-focused stories that explore family, memory, and social issues. With Sheep in the Box, he ventures into near-future science fiction, blending emotional storytelling with technological speculation.
The film taps into current societal questions: How far should we go with technology? Can artificial intelligence replace human connection? And how do we reconcile grief and memory with machines that mimic life?
By addressing these themes, Kore-eda continues to push the boundaries of cinema, making Sheep in the Box a highly anticipated release worldwide.
Looking Ahead
With production underway, international audiences can expect Sheep in the Box to reach theaters in the coming years, following Neon’s release strategy. The combination of Kore-eda’s sensitive direction, a talented cast, and a thought-provoking premise positions the film as a must-watch for fans of family dramas and sci-fi alike.
