Boeing Prepares for Major Fundraising Effort

Boeing Co. is gearing up for a significant capital increase, planning to raise over $15 billion as early as Monday. This strategic move aims to bolster the company’s liquidity amid ongoing challenges in the aviation industry. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that this fundraising effort may include both shares and convertible debt.

Aiming for Stability Amidst Turbulence

Just last week, Boeing received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to sell up to $25 billion in equity and debt. This initiative is crucial for the company as it seeks to avoid a downgrade to junk status, which could further complicate its recovery efforts.

The need for a cash infusion has become pressing, especially as Boeing anticipates using approximately $4 billion in cash during the fourth quarter alone, resulting in an expected free cash outflow of around $14 billion for the year. The company continues to navigate through the complexities of restarting its airplane factories, including the high-demand 737 Max assembly lines.

Labor Struggles and Financial Pressures

Boeing’s challenges are compounded by labor issues, as factory workers recently voted to reject a new contract offer that proposed a 35% wage increase over four years. In response, the company plans to reduce its workforce by about 10%, impacting executives, managers, and employees.

According to Bank of America analyst Ronald Epstein, Boeing may ultimately raise between $18 billion and $20 billion. This fundraising would mark the largest equity offering since SoftBank Group’s stake sale in T-Mobile US Inc. in 2020, highlighting the scale of Boeing’s efforts.

Future Prospects and Strategic Reviews

As Boeing grapples with these financial hurdles, it is also conducting a comprehensive review of its business portfolio, including the future of its troubled Starliner space capsule program. This review, led by CEO Kelly Ortberg, is expected to conclude by the end of the year, potentially reshaping the company’s strategic direction.

With Boeing shares plummeting over 40% this year and recent quarterly results missing expectations, the urgency of this capital raise cannot be overstated. Investors and industry watchers will be keenly observing how this unfolds in the coming days.

Boeing’s journey through this turbulent period is far from over, but this significant capital raise could be a crucial step toward stability and recovery.
