In a surprising turn of events, Marvel’s highly anticipated reboot of Blade, starring the talented Mahershala Ali as the iconic Daywalker, has been pulled from the release calendar. Originally set for a Nov. 7, 2025, premiere, the vampire action film has been replaced by Predator: Badlands, the sixth installment in the popular Predator franchise.
This decision follows a series of production challenges and strategic shifts within Disney, particularly after CEO Bob Iger announced that Marvel would be scaling back to a maximum of three films per year. This leaves Blade as the only superhero movie previously slated for 2025 that hadn’t begun filming, alongside Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Director Yann Demange, known for his work on Lovecraft Country, exited the project in June, marking another setback in the film’s troubled journey. Initially set for a November 2023 release, Blade faced multiple delays, including a shift to September 2024 and then to November 2025. These changes were compounded by disruptions during the early COVID-19 pandemic and the recent Writers Guild of America strike.
Marvel’s decision to take a step back comes from a desire not to rush the film, with insiders suggesting that the studio wants to ensure that the reboot meets the high standards set by its predecessors. Kevin Feige, Marvel’s president, has emphasized the importance of creating the right version of Blade, which first emerged on the big screen in the late ’90s with Wesley Snipes at the helm.
Fans were reminded of Snipes’ legacy this summer when he made a surprise cameo in the blockbuster hit Deadpool & Wolverine, where he quipped, “There’s only been one Blade. There will only ever be one Blade.” As it stands, that statement still holds true.
While Marvel has added three untitled projects to its schedule for 2028, the fate of Blade remains uncertain. Will we ever see Ali don the iconic shades and leather once more? Only time will tell, but for now, it looks like the Daywalker will have to wait a little longer to take center stage.
