The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) has appointed Andrew Stewart as its new Chief Communications Officer, signaling an exciting chapter for the organization and the theatrical exhibition industry. In this pivotal role, Stewart will spearhead communications and media relations strategies, aiming to elevate awareness and support for movie theaters across the entertainment landscape.
A Proven Leader in Entertainment Communications
Stewart, a seasoned professional with a rich background in entertainment journalism and strategic communications, will be based in Los Angeles and report directly to Michael O’Leary, NATO’s president and CEO. His mission? To amplify the recent commitment of $2.2 billion from theater owners dedicated to upgrading cinema experiences over the next three years.
With a track record that includes former roles at Variety, 42West, and Imax, Stewart is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of today’s media environment. He will work hand-in-hand with the Cinema Foundation to boost movie theater attendance and engage audiences at CinemaCon, the industry’s major annual exhibition convention.
Bringing Passion and Experience to NATO
O’Leary expressed his enthusiasm for Stewart’s appointment, highlighting his strategic expertise and deep passion for the theater experience. “Andrew will be invaluable in keeping the conversation around the future of filmed entertainment alive,” O’Leary stated. “His drive to see the business of moviegoing not only succeed but innovate and grow is exactly what we need.”
Stewart previously held the position of VP at 42West, where he led the strategic communications division. His experience at Participant involved successful campaigns for critically acclaimed films such as Wonder, The Post, RBG, and Green Book. During his tenure at Imax, he contributed to blockbuster releases like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World.
A Storytelling Mission
Reflecting on his new role, Stewart emphasized the importance of storytelling in communications. “The opportunity to join a venerable organization such as NATO, to tell their story on behalf of the exhibition community, is nothing short of perfect,” he said. “I couldn’t be more excited to roll up my sleeves and reveal this next chapter in the theatrical exhibition story.”
With Stewart at the helm of communications, NATO is poised to reinvigorate its narrative around moviegoing, ensuring that theaters remain a vital part of the entertainment industry’s future.
