From Olympic Glory to Infamy
Ryan James Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder, is now at the center of a shocking criminal investigation. U.S. officials allege that Wedding has transitioned from a celebrated athlete to the head of a murderous drug trafficking organization, responsible for smuggling vast quantities of cocaine across North America.
FBI’s Manhunt for a Drug Kingpin
The FBI is actively searching for the 43-year-old Wedding, who is wanted on multiple serious charges, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, murder linked to a criminal enterprise, and attempted murder. Currently on the run, Wedding is believed to be hiding in Mexico, and the FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
“Wedding is a Canadian citizen who may be residing in Mexico,” the FBI stated, adding that he has adopted various aliases, including “James Conrad King” and “Jesse King.”
Details of the Drug Operation
According to the Department of Justice, Wedding was allegedly the mastermind behind a transnational drug trafficking ring that operated from January to August 2024. This organization purportedly shipped hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia, through Mexico and Southern California, into Canada and other U.S. locations.
Federal officials have noted that the operation involved the use of stash houses along the West Coast and long-haul semi-trucks to transport the drugs. The investigation has already resulted in the seizure of over one ton of cocaine, multiple weapons, more than $255,000 in cash, and $3.2 million in cryptocurrency.
Allegations of Violence and Murder
The DOJ alleges that Wedding’s organization resorted to extreme violence, including orchestrating brutal murders. Notably, Wedding and another associate, Andrew Clark, are implicated in the murder of an Ontario family in November 2023 and are believed to have ordered the killing of another individual in May 2024 over a debt.
Clark was apprehended earlier this month in Mexico, and several other co-defendants have also been arrested in connection with this extensive investigation.
A Fall from Grace
Ryan James Wedding represented Canada in the men’s parallel giant slalom snowboarding event at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, finishing 24th in his only Olympic appearance. Now, he has been labeled “El Jefe” and “Public Enemy” in the drug trafficking world, highlighting the dramatic transformation from his Olympic past to his current status as a wanted fugitive.
“This is a classic case of an Olympic athlete turned drug lord,” stated United States Attorney Martin Estrada. “We are committed to protecting the public and dismantling sophisticated, violent organized crime groups.”
