In a major move for the animation industry, GKIDS has officially been acquired by Japan’s renowned Toho Animation. This acquisition marks a significant shift in the landscape of animated film distribution, with GKIDS becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toho International, based in Los Angeles.

Eric Beckman, the founder of GKIDS, will continue as CEO, with Dave Jesteadt remaining president. Since their leadership began in 2009, the duo has guided GKIDS to success, including over 13 Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature. Notably, this year, they celebrated the win with Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece, “The Boy and the Heron.”

Toho President Hiro Matsuoka praised GKIDS for its unique position in the U.S. market, stating that their collaboration aligns perfectly with Toho’s strategic goals. “This partnership will accelerate Toho’s efforts to prioritize animation, develop international markets, and support the creation of intellectual properties,” he said. Matsuoka expressed enthusiasm for working alongside Beckman, Jesteadt, and the entire GKIDS team as they join the Toho family.

The acquisition not only strengthens Toho’s foothold in the North American market but also enhances their plans for global expansion. By connecting Japanese and international creators and studios, Toho aims to elevate the reach of animated content worldwide.

This move follows Toho’s recent acquisition of Japanese animation studio Science SARU and an investment in the Los Angeles-based production company Fifth Season, known for projects like “Severance.” By adding GKIDS, Toho gains a respected distribution operation that complements its existing licensing and e-commerce strategies.

Beckman and Jesteadt shared their excitement about the acquisition, assuring fans and partners that GKIDS will maintain its distinctive identity. “With the backing of Toho, we are empowered to bring even more incredible films to audiences in North America and beyond,” they stated. “Together, we will champion animation as a vital cinematic art form and continue to push the boundaries of the medium.”

With this partnership, the future looks bright for both GKIDS and Toho. As they prepare to deliver even more remarkable animated films, fans can look forward to an exciting new chapter in animation history.
