Ron Hale, cherished for his memorable role as Dr. Roger Coleridge on the classic soap opera Ryan’s Hope, has passed away at the age of 78. His family announced that Hale died on August 27 in St. George, South Carolina, although they did not disclose a cause of death.
Hale’s portrayal of the charming yet complicated doctor captivated audiences across more than 900 episodes of Ryan’s Hope from 1975 to 1989. His talent was recognized with Daytime Emmy nominations in 1979 and 1980, solidifying his place in daytime television history.
After Ryan’s Hope, Hale continued to enchant viewers as Mike Corbin on General Hospital from 1995 until 2010, and he also made appearances on the soap’s spinoff, Port Charles. His extensive television career included guest spots on various shows such as N.Y.P.D., Search for Tomorrow, Matlock, and even MacGyver, showcasing his versatile acting skills.
In film, Hale had a notable role as Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis in the acclaimed political thriller All the President’s Men, alongside Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. His filmography also includes works like Me, Natalie (1969), Trial by Jury (1994), The Lord Protector (1996), Sunstorm (2001), and The Ghost and the Whale (2017).
Born Ronald Hale Thigpen on January 2, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he developed a passion for acting early on. He attended Furman University and performed in plays at Columbia’s Trustus Theatre, which his brother and sister-in-law helped establish.
