Get ready to scream! A restored 4K version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is hitting theaters today, just in time to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. Originally directed by Tobe Hooper, this legendary horror flick is back on the big screen thanks to MPI Media Group and Dark Sky Films.
You can catch it in 900 theaters nationwide, including Regal, Cinemark, and Alamo Drafthouse locations. The run kicks off today—the same day it first premiered in 1974—and will continue through Halloween and into early November.
The film features a chilling story about five friends who embark on a weekend getaway, only to become victims of a butcher in a human skin mask and his cannibal family. Despite its violent reputation and history of controversy, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is regarded as a groundbreaking piece of cinema, spawning sequels, remakes, and even a prequel.
Justin DiPietro, who recently took over MPI and Dark Sky, said the re-release has been in the works for a while, starting with a special screening at SXSW. Exciting events have also included a red carpet premiere at Beyond Fest in LA, complete with a Q&A featuring cast and crew.
