Britain’s competition regulator has announced that Amazon’s partnership with AI startup Anthropic will not be subjected to further investigation, as it does not present any competition concerns. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) confirmed that the collaboration, which includes a $4 billion investment from Amazon, falls outside the scope of the UK’s merger regulations.

In response to the CMA’s decision, an Amazon spokesperson expressed satisfaction, highlighting the regulator’s acknowledgment of its limited jurisdiction regarding the partnership. The CMA has also cleared a similar collaboration between Microsoft and Inflection AI.

Conversely, Alphabet’s partnership with Anthropic is still under review. An Anthropic spokesperson emphasized the company’s independence, stating, “Anthropic is an independent company and our strategic partnerships and investor relationships do not diminish our corporate governance independence or freedom to partner with others.”

Co-founded by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has garnered billions in investments from various tech giants. As antitrust regulators globally increase scrutiny over agreements between major tech firms and smaller startups, the dynamics of AI partnerships continue to evolve.
