Emerald Fennell’s highly anticipated adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” has gained significant momentum with the addition of Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie and BAFTA nominee Jacob Elordi, who will portray the iconic roles of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, respectively.
Produced by MRC and LuckyChap, the film will be written, directed, and produced by Fennell, drawing from Emily Brontë’s classic romance novel. This project marks the third collaboration between Fennell and LuckyChap, following their successful partnerships on “Promising Young Woman” (for which Fennell won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) and the recent release “Saltburn.” Notably, Fennell also had a role in LuckyChap’s blockbuster “Barbie,” which grossed $1.4 billion and won an Academy Award.
Currently in pre-production, “Wuthering Heights” is set to begin filming in the U.K. in 2025. Fennell first announced her plans for this adaptation on social media in July, sharing a quote from the novel: “Be with me always – Take any form – Drive me mad.” At that time, details about the project were scarce, but it was confirmed that Fennell would be working again with MRC.
With Robbie and Elordi now attached, many familiar faces from “Saltburn” are reuniting for this film. Barry Keoghan, who starred in “Saltburn,” expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Fennell again, stating, “Anything that Emerald puts her hands on, I’m there. She’s incredible.”
Robbie has been a vocal supporter of Fennell’s unique filmmaking style, praising her ability to immerse audiences in captivating worlds. Reflecting on “Saltburn,” Robbie noted, “Emerald immerses you into a world so quickly. She’s so masterful at tone and plot.”
This marks a significant moment for Robbie, who has yet to appear in one of Fennell’s films despite their collaborations. Carey Mulligan received an Oscar nomination for her role in “Promising Young Woman,” while Keoghan and Elordi led “Saltburn,” with supporting performances from Mulligan and Rosamund Pike. Now, Robbie’s long-awaited appearance in a Fennell project is finally coming to fruition.
In the meantime, Robbie’s upcoming projects include a starring role in Kogonada’s “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” set for release in May 2025. LuckyChap’s recent release, “My Old Ass,” is currently in theaters, and the company recently launched its first live theater production, the off-Broadway play “The Big Gay Jamboree.”
Elordi, following a breakout year with “Saltburn” and his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” will next appear in “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” directed by Justin Kurzel, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.”
