The Toronto International Film Festival saw a dramatic interruption during the premiere of Pharrell Williams’ Lego biopic “Piece by Piece” on Tuesday, as an animal rights activist from PETA stormed the stage. The protest was aimed at Williams’ role as Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director, specifically criticizing his use of animal products in fashion.

As the post-screening Q&A session was about to start, the protester took to the stage with a sign reading, “Pharrell: Stop Supporting Killing Animals for Fashion.” The activist loudly condemned the designer’s use of animal products, shouting, “Pharrell, stop torturing animals! Ostriches are being hung upside down, electrocuted with their necks slit!”

Pharrell responded calmly to the disruption, saying, “You’re right, you’re right, god bless you, it’s OK,” and encouraged the audience to applaud the protester. Despite being escorted out of the theater, the protester continued to voice her concerns.

Following the incident, Pharrell addressed the protest directly, suggesting that significant change often requires time and influence. “Rome wasn’t made in a day,” he explained. “When you have plans to change things, you need to be in a position of power to influence change.” He expressed that while he understands the protestor’s frustration, her approach was not constructive and that progress is being made.

PETA shared footage of the protest on X (formerly Twitter) and commented, “We CRASHED Pharrell’s [‘Piece by Piece’] premiere at [TIFF] to remind the Louis Vuitton men’s creative director that animals suffer for fur & wildlife skins. Do the right thing and switch to faux & vegan alternatives NOW!”

In a statement to Variety, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman responded to Pharrell’s comments: “We would be happy to stop disrupting Pharrell’s appearances but despite a lot of lip service, he’s yet to ditch fur and exotic skins. Pharrell can decide in a heartbeat, today, to use his power for good and stop being complicit in cruelty—it’s quite easy to be kind.”
