Jennie Kim, known for her role in Blackpink, has signed a solo artist deal with Columbia Records, in collaboration with her record label and entertainment company, Oddatelier. The announcement came on Sunday, revealing that Jennie will be dropping her new solo single this October.
Jennie rose to prominence in 2016 as a member of Blackpink, the groundbreaking Korean girl group that has achieved historic milestones, including being the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard charts and the only Korean act to headline Coachella. Last year, she expanded her horizons with a collaboration on the song “One of the Girls” featuring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, and appeared in the controversial HBO series “The Idol.”
Originally from Korea, Jennie moved to Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 10 for five years before returning to Korea to join YG Entertainment’s talent academy. Blackpink’s success includes being the first Korean female group to have five music videos each surpass one billion views on YouTube, and they are the most-followed girl group on Spotify.
In “The Idol,” created by Sam Levinson, Jennie, performing under the stage name Jennie Ruby Jane, plays a backup singer and dancer to Lily-Rose Depp’s character, who eventually steps into the spotlight herself.
Reflecting on her acting journey, Jennie shared insights on the BBC Sounds “Dua Lipa: At Your Service” podcast, explaining her approach to acting. “Acting was definitely something I wanted to explore, but I wanted to ensure it was authentic. I didn’t want to rush into opportunities without being fully prepared,” Jennie said. “Meeting Sam Levinson in LA and discussing the role with him deeply moved me, and I knew I had to get it right.”
