Katie Holmes has paid tribute to her late Dawson’s Creek co-star Obi Ndefo, who passed away at the age of 51. The actor’s death was confirmed by his sister, Nkem Ndefo, in a poignant Facebook post on Saturday, August 31. Nkem shared a heartfelt message alongside a photo of the siblings embracing, writing, “Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother and knowing he’s finally at peace.”
On Sunday, September 1, Holmes, 45, honored Ndefo’s memory by reposting a tribute from her Dawson’s Creek co-star Mary-Margaret Humes on Instagram Stories. In her post, Holmes described Ndefo as “wonderful to work with and such a kind man,” extending her prayers and condolences to his family. “Rest in peace,” Holmes wrote, reflecting on the actor’s impact.
Obi Ndefo was best known for his role as Bodie Wells, Bessie Potter’s boyfriend, on Dawson’s Creek from 1998 to 2002. His character’s storyline intertwined with Holmes’s character, Joey Potter, contributing significantly to the show’s dynamic. Mary-Margaret Humes, who portrayed Gail Leery, also expressed her sorrow and admiration for Ndefo. In her tribute, Humes described him as a “bright shining light” and praised his “pure unfiltered love and tenacity.” She concluded her message with, “Rest in peace, sweet warrior.”
Ndefo, a Yale University drama school graduate, had a diverse career that extended beyond Dawson’s Creek. His television credits include roles in NCIS: Los Angeles, The West Wing, and NYPD Blue. In addition to acting, he was also a yoga teacher, showcasing his commitment to both physical and mental well-being.
Tragically, Ndefo’s life was marked by a severe accident in 2019, when he was hit by an SUV while loading groceries into his car. The accident led to him becoming a double amputee. In a video interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2020, Ndefo reflected on his traumatic experience, noting his acceptance of his new reality and expressing resilience despite the challenges.
The cause of Obi Ndefo’s death has not been disclosed, as his sister did not specify details in her Facebook announcement. The actor’s passing is a significant loss to the entertainment community, and his contributions to both film and television will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
