Julián Ortega, the Spanish actor known for his role in Netflix’s hit series Elite, passed away on August 25 at the age of 41. Ortega suffered a cardiac arrest while visiting Zahora Beach in Barbate, Spain. Despite efforts by paramedics to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, there were reports suggesting Ortega had drowned, but authorities later confirmed that he went into cardiac arrest on the shore. His death was confirmed by Spain’s Union de Actores y Actrices, which posted an obituary on Monday.
Ortega was recognized for his role as the manager of “La Cabana” restaurant in the first season of Elite. The series, which aired from 2018 to 2024, explores the dynamics between working-class teens and the privileged elite at a prestigious private school. The show has been celebrated for its gripping storyline and was awarded “killer series” at the MTV MIAW Awards in 2019.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans. Paco Collado, Ortega’s co-star from The Countryside, expressed his sorrow on social media, praising Ortega for his sympathy, generosity, and professionalism.
Ortega’s acting career also included roles in other notable projects, further cementing his place in the Spanish entertainment industry.
