In her second directorial effort, “Mother Mara,” actor-turned-director Mirjana Karanović takes on the dual challenge of presenting both a raw emotional journey and her own unfiltered performance. The film opens with the funeral of Mara’s son, Nemanja (Pavle Cemerikić), whose life was cut short just as he was on the brink of a new chapter at the London School of Economics. Mara, a stoic figure, faces the loss with a cold demeanor that sparks concern from her sister (Jasna Zalica) and whispers among the mourners.

Returning to her demanding office job, Mara, who has long since been abandoned by her husband, finds solace in her work. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Milan (Vučić Perović), a charismatic personal trainer, arrives with inquiries about property and a revelation that he knew Nemanja. Intrigued and troubled by the secrets she uncovers through Nemanja’s phone, Mara becomes increasingly drawn to Milan.

Karanović’s previous film, “A Good Wife” (2016), explored themes of rebellion within historical contexts, but “Mother Mara” pushes boundaries by defying conventional gender roles through Mara’s affair with a younger man. This act of rebellion against societal norms becomes a pivotal aspect of her character’s journey.

The film’s meticulous production design by Dragana Baćović and Laura Locher’s costumes play a crucial role in defining Mara and Milan’s characters. Mara’s sharp, revealing work attire contrasts with the softer, more relaxed clothing she wears at home, symbolizing her emotional transformation. In contrast, Milan’s wardrobe highlights his physical appeal and contrasts his vulnerability.

Co-produced by directors Jasmila Zbanić, known for “Grbavica,” and Andrea Staka, noted for “Fraulein,” “Mother Mara” is a study of grief, desire, and personal rediscovery, marked by Karanović’s bold storytelling and performance.
