Perry Kurtz, Beloved Comedian and ‘America’s Got Talent’ Contestant, Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident

Perry Kurtz, a renowned comedian and notable contestant on America’s Got Talent, has tragically passed away at the age of 73. Kurtz died in a hit-and-run incident on Ventura Boulevard late on the evening of August 15, 2024. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene after a gray Honda Civic struck him from behind and fled the area.

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that Kurtz was traveling on Ventura Boulevard when the vehicle hit him. The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Nathon Jaimes, initially escaped but was apprehended by police at his home early on August 16. Jaimes has been charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in death. The abandoned vehicle was discovered near the accident site.

Kurtz’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief from the comedy community and beyond. Longtime friend and fellow comedian Dante Rusciolelli expressed his deep sorrow, describing Kurtz as a “staple in the Los Angeles comedy community” and a cherished friend since 1987. Rusciolelli conveyed his condolences to Kurtz’s family and celebrated his significant contributions to comedy.

Kurtz was widely recognized for his distinctive comedic style, which included a memorable appearance on America’s Got Talent during its eighth season. There, he showcased a stand-up comedy rap that entertained judges Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howard Stern. His impressive career also featured appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Late Show with James Corden. Known for his improv work, Kurtz performed alongside comedy legend Robin Williams in San Francisco and became a fixture at Hollywood’s Comedy Store.

Despite his passing, Kurtz’s presence remained strong through his social media activity. His YouTube channel, which boasted nearly 2,000 subscribers, featured recent uploads of his performances, including a video from just five days before his death. The video captured him performing “I’ll Always Remember Us This Way” at The Barrel Tavern in Sherman Oaks, CA.

An autopsy by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office will provide further details about Kurtz’s death. His passing marks a significant loss to the comedy world, where he was celebrated for his vibrant performances and enduring spirit.
