Eight Years Ago Today: Aaron Judge Hits a Home Run on MLB Debut
Aaron Judge, once an underdog first-round pick, made a sensational MLB debut that marked the beginning of a legendary career. Critics once doubted his potential, labeling him ‘too big’ for baseball. Hailing from Linden, California, Judge was nurtured by his parents, Wayne and Patty, who encouraged him to explore various sports and emphasized hard work and education.
Humble Beginnings at Linden High School
At Linden High School, Judge’s power at the plate quickly became evident. As a freshman, he was already a formidable long-distance hitter. By his junior year, he boasted a .500 batting average and an impressive slugging percentage. Beyond baseball, Judge excelled in football and basketball, though he eventually chose to focus on baseball, committing to Fresno State.
Fresno State and the Draft
Judge’s time at Fresno State honed his raw talent. He achieved a .358 batting average and earned Freshman All-American honors. By his junior year, he was leading the team in home runs, doubles, and RBIs. Despite his performance, some scouts doubted his major league potential due to his stature and strikeout rate.
Fortunately, the Yankees saw his unique talent. On draft day, New York selected Judge 32nd overall, investing in his potential. Although a torn quadriceps kept him out of the 2013 season, Judge used the time to study the game and prepare for his professional debut.

Judge’s persistence paid off when he was called up to the Yankees on August 13, 2016. In his debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, he and teammate Tyler Austin made history by hitting home runs in their first MLB at-bats during the same game.
