In an exclusive interview with , Zoe Kravitz opened up about her highly anticipated directorial debut, Blink Twice, set to premiere on August 23, 2024. The psychological thriller stars Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie and explores the unsettling dynamics of power and perception.
Kravitz, known for her acting roles in The Batman and Big Little Lies, has transitioned to directing with a compelling vision. Blink Twice follows Frida (Ackie), a cocktail waitress, and tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum), who meet at a fundraising gala and embark on a vacation to Slater’s private island. What begins as a glamorous getaway soon devolves into a series of eerie and disturbing events, as Frida uncovers dark truths about her surroundings.
In her conversation with Pinkvilla, Kravitz described her creative process, revealing that her directorial journey was driven by a desire to tell an “honest and entertaining” story. She reflected on how childhood perspectives evolve into more complex and nuanced views as one grows older. “When you’re a child, you see things from a very honest point of view. As you get older, everything becomes a bit more grey. Normalized. Romanticized,” Kravitz said.
The actress turned director expressed her intention to challenge traditional narratives about female empowerment and explore the nature of power itself. “What if Eve woke up and realized—the Garden of Eden is uh, kinda bullsh*t,” she mused. “And wait, Adam, you also kinda suck. This place is fantasy, like a full matrix.” This thematic exploration is reflected in the film’s setting—a private island that Kravitz likens to “Lord of the Flies,” isolating characters to reveal their true nature.
Kravitz began writing Blink Twice in the summer of 2017, motivated by her surprise at the lack of similar stories. However, significant events in the entertainment industry, such as the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the Jeffrey Epstein revelations, influenced her approach. “By October of 2017, Harvey Weinstein was exposed—holy sh*t! The public reckoning had begun,” Kravitz recalled. She adapted her story to reflect a “post-‘time’s up’ world,” aiming to address the broader issues of power and manipulation rather than focusing on specific individuals.
The film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and produced by Free Association, This Is Important, and Bold Choice Production. It also features a notable cast including Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, Geena Davis, and Alia Shawkat.
