The latest Disney Marvel sequel, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their iconic characters, has earned $494.3 million domestically and $535.1 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.029 billion. This achievement makes it the second film of 2024 to surpass the billion-dollar milestone, following Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which earned $1.558 billion.

The film is on track to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing 2019’s “Joker,” which grossed $1.07 billion.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the 31st Disney film and the 11th Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to reach the billion-dollar mark. This success is particularly significant for the MCU, which has faced recent challenges with underperforming titles like “Eternals,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” and “The Marvels.” While recent MCU releases such as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” came close, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is only the second MCU film to achieve this milestone since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” with Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” leading the pack with $1.9 billion in 2021.

Directed by Shawn Levy, “Deadpool & Wolverine” marks the first MCU film to feature characters previously licensed to 20th Century Fox. Reynolds and Levy brought together a lineup of Fox-era heroes, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Chris Evans as the Human Torch from “Fantastic Four,” and Wesley Snipes as Blade, alongside Deadpool and Wolverine on a high-stakes mission.
