Warner Bros. Discovery has recently implemented a significant change affecting Cartoon Network’s digital presence. As of August 8, visitors to the Cartoon Network website have been redirected to Max, the company’s subscription streaming service. This move is part of a broader strategy aimed at streamlining operations and increasing subscriptions to Max.
The redirection brings users to a page on Max that promotes the streaming service’s offerings, encouraging visitors to sign up in order to access their favorite Cartoon Network shows. The new page also highlights features such as the Kid’s Profile, which includes ratings and privacy settings designed to create a safer viewing environment for children.
The message displayed on the redirected page reads: “Looking for episodes of your favorite Cartoon Network shows?” and directs users to Max with the note, “Check out what’s available to stream on Max (subscription required).”
A spokesperson for Cartoon Network elaborated on the shift, stating, “We are focusing on the Cartoon Network shows and social media where we find consumers are the most engaged and there is a meaningful potential for growth.” This pivot reflects the company’s effort to concentrate resources on platforms that show higher engagement and growth prospects.
Despite this website change, Cartoon Network will continue to broadcast 11 hours of programming daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. The channel will still offer popular shows such as Adventure Time, Craig of the Creek, The Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans GO!, Steven Universe, We Bare Bears, and Clarence on TV. However, the site’s previous content offerings, including full episodes, clips, and free games related to these shows, have been discontinued.
This move comes in the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2022 merger of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, and the removal of classic Warner Bros. cartoons from Max, such as Looney Tunes and The Flintstones. Although there was initial confusion about the removal of some classic content, it was later clarified as a mistake.
The redirection aligns with Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader cost-cutting measures and strategic focus on boosting Max subscriptions. This approach mirrors similar strategies adopted by other media companies, like Paramount Global, which have also made content changes to drive subscription growth.
Warner Bros. Discovery recently reported a decline in revenue and a significant net loss attributed to decreased value in its cable TV networks. While the number of domestic streaming subscribers has slightly dropped, international streaming subscriptions have seen an increase, indicating a shifting landscape in the company’s streaming strategy.
