Hindenburg Research, the US-based investment research firm known for its controversial report on the Adani Group, has sparked renewed interest with a cryptic social media post hinting at a forthcoming major report focused on India. The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), reads: “Something big soon India.”

This latest development follows the firm’s previous 2023 report, which accused the Adani Group of “insider trading” and other financial irregularities. The allegations, detailed in a scathing report, led to a significant drop in the stock prices of various Adani companies, resulting in reported losses exceeding USD 100 billion.

The Hindenburg report claimed that Adani had engaged in stock manipulation, artificially inflating share prices. These accusations caused a sharp decline in Adani Group’s market valuation and coincided with the company’s USD 2.5 billion public offering. The Adani Group has consistently denied these allegations.

The controversy surrounding the Hindenburg report intensified in July this year when BJP leader and senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani alleged that a US-based businessman with ties to China commissioned the report. Jethmalani claimed that Mark Kingdon, through Kingdon Capital Management LLC, was behind the report, using Hindenburg Research to target Adani Group and profit from short-selling Adani shares.

However, the Supreme Court of India dismissed the claims made in the Hindenburg report and cleared the Adani Group of the alleged violations. The court ruled that the report could not serve as the basis for a separate investigation, instructing the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to proceed according to the law. A review petition seeking a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also dismissed.

In response to the allegations, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has denounced the Hindenburg report as an attempt to destabilize his company and tarnish the reputation of India’s current government. Despite the controversy, Adani has maintained that the group’s foundations remain strong and resilient.

As speculation builds around Hindenburg Research’s new report, the Indian financial and political communities are bracing for potential implications.
