A harrowing incident unfolded early Friday morning when Delta Flight 8860, carrying Carolina Panthers players and staff, skidded off the runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The aircraft, arriving from Providence, Rhode Island, veered off the taxiway around 2:35 AM local time after a routine landing.
Witnesses described a tense scene as emergency vehicles rushed to the aircraft. Fortunately, Delta Airlines confirmed that all 188 passengers, including the Panthers’ team, emerged unharmed. The airline stated that the right main landing gear of the flight exited the taxiway but assured that no injuries were reported.
Airport personnel acted swiftly to ensure the safety of everyone on board. Within an hour, airport crews provided stairs to allow passengers to disembark safely, and they were then transported to the terminal by bus. Delta Airlines apologized for the inconvenience, highlighting the effectiveness of their emergency protocols and the professionalism of the flight crew.
This incident came on the heels of a disappointing 24 hours for the Carolina Panthers. Earlier, the team had faced a 17-3 defeat against the New England Patriots in their first preseason game. The runway incident added to the team’s challenges, marking an inauspicious start to their 2024 campaign.
Interestingly, this was not the only aviation-related incident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport that night. Earlier, an American Airlines flight from Tampa Bay encountered severe turbulence but landed safely. Four flight attendants from that flight were hospitalized for evaluation, though no passengers were injured.
As the Panthers recover from this unsettling experience, their focus will shift back to preparing for the upcoming NFL season, hoping for a smoother journey ahead both on and off the field.
