Thomas Ceccon, Italy’s standout swimmer at the Paris Olympics 2024, has made headlines for an unexpected reason: he was seen sleeping in a park. The 23-year-old Olympic gold medallist, who won gold in the 100m backstroke and bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, has been vocal about the subpar living conditions in the Olympic village.

Ceccon’s situation became widely known after Saudi Arabian rower Husein Alireza posted an image of the swimmer resting in a park on Instagram. The timing of the photo remains unclear—whether it was taken before or after Ceccon’s and his teammates’ unsuccessful bid to qualify for the men’s 4x100m medley relay final.

The Italian swimmer had previously criticized the conditions within the Olympic village, citing inadequate air conditioning, poor-quality food, and an overall lack of comfort. Ceccon expressed his frustration, revealing that the heat and noise made it difficult for him to rest, particularly during the afternoon, a time he usually dedicates to napping at home.

“There is no air conditioning in the village, it’s hot, the food is bad,” Ceccon told The Sun. “Many athletes move for this reason: it’s not an alibi or excuse, it’s the reality of what perhaps not everyone knows. I’m disappointed that I didn’t make the final but I was too tired. It’s hard to sleep both at night and in the afternoon.”

Ceccon’s complaints are part of a broader issue at the Paris Games. American tennis star Coco Gauff has also voiced concerns about the living conditions, highlighting that this problem is not unique to one athlete. In response to these complaints, the Indian Sports Ministry recently dispatched 40 portable air conditioners to alleviate the discomfort of athletes competing in the sweltering conditions of the Olympic Village.

As the Games continue, the focus on athlete welfare and the quality of living conditions in the Olympic Village remains a critical issue, with many hoping that improvements will be made to ensure that competitors can perform at their best.
