British rower Henry Fieldman has made Olympic history by becoming the first athlete to secure medals in both men’s and women’s rowing events. Fieldman, who served as the coxswain for Great Britain’s Women’s Eight team, helped the crew win bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This achievement follows his bronze medal performance with the men’s team in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In the final race at Paris 2024, Great Britain’s Women’s Eight team finished third behind Canada, which earned silver, and Romania, which took gold. Fieldman’s unique accomplishment is a direct result of changes to World Rowing’s rules after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which now allow coxswains of any gender to steer eights, the only Olympic rowing boats that use coxswains.
