Carrie Underwood is making a triumphant return to the spotlight as she steps into Katy Perry’s shoes as a judge on “American Idol,” the very show that launched her career two decades ago. The announcement was made on Thursday morning, marking a significant moment in the show’s history.
Underwood, who won the fourth season of “American Idol” in 2005, will be rejoining the show that catapulted her to stardom. “This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on ‘Idol’ and launched her successful multi-GRAMMY Award-winning career. As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular television shows,” said Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, in a press release. “This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie.”
Underwood expressed her excitement about returning to the show that changed her life. “I went from nobody knowing my name to tens of millions of people watching the show,” she said in a video announcing her new role. “I’m proud of everything I was able to accomplish on the show, and I’m so proud of everything I’ve accomplished since.”
The new season of “American Idol” is set to begin auditions on August 12, with Underwood slated to bring her extensive experience and insights to the judging panel. The show, known for its wide-reaching influence and impact on aspiring artists, will now benefit from Underwood’s unique perspective as both a former contestant and a seasoned industry professional.
Underwood, who currently resides in Nashville with her husband, former NHL center Mike Fisher, and their two sons, Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5, will need to navigate the logistics of filming the show in Los Angeles. It remains to be seen if she and her family will relocate for the show’s production.
Katy Perry, who has been a staple of the “American Idol” judging panel for the past seven seasons, announced her departure from the show earlier this year. Perry revealed her decision during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in February, stating, “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for ‘Idol.’ I mean, I love ‘Idol’ so much… It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”
With Underwood’s return, “American Idol” is poised to enter a new chapter, blending nostalgia with fresh energy as it continues to discover and celebrate new musical talent.
