President Joe Biden celebrated the successful conclusion of a complex international negotiation on Thursday, announcing the release of three Americans from Russian detention. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Marine veteran Paul Whelan, and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva have been freed in what is being hailed as one of the largest prisoner swaps since the Cold War.
The swap, which involved a total of 24 individuals, saw the release of eight Russians, including three held in U.S. prisons: Vadim Konoshchenok, Vladislav Klyushin, and Roman Seleznyov. Additionally, Russians held in Slovenia, Poland, and Norway—suspected of ties to Russian intelligence—were also part of the exchange.
The deal was finalized on a tarmac in Ankara, Turkey, and marks a significant achievement for the Biden administration. During a White House briefing, President Biden expressed his gratitude to the allies involved and underscored the importance of international cooperation. “Now, their brutal ordeal is over,” Biden declared, referring to the freed Americans. He noted that the deal was a testament to the power of diplomacy and strong international alliances.
In an emotional moment, Biden and the families of the detainees spoke to the freed prisoners via phone. The President highlighted the personal impact of the release, noting a special moment where he led the group in singing “Happy Birthday” to 13-year-old Miriam, daughter of Alsu Kurmasheva.
Biden’s administration has now facilitated the release of over 60 hostages and wrongful detainees globally in the past three years. Whelan, the longest-held American detainee in Russia, was arrested in December 2018 and sentenced to 16 years on espionage charges. Gershkovich, who had been imprisoned for over a year on similar charges, was sentenced to 16 years following a brief trial. Kurmasheva, detained in June 2023, faced charges related to disseminating false information about Russia’s military.
This significant diplomatic win for the Biden administration reflects ongoing efforts to address and resolve international detentions and highlight the importance of global alliances in achieving such outcomes.
