The Green Bay Packers have made a major commitment to their future by signing quarterback Jordan Love to a four-year, $220 million contract extension, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. This deal places Love among the highest-paid players in NFL history, alongside Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, with an average annual value of $55 million.
The contract also features a record-breaking $75 million signing bonus. This significant investment underscores the Packers’ confidence in Love, who has shown remarkable growth since taking over as the team’s starting quarterback.
After a year of negotiations and a previous smaller deal, Love’s new contract comes as he returns to training camp, having initially opted out until a deal was finalized. Love’s standout performance in the 2023 season, where he ranked second in the NFL with 32 touchdown passes, seventh in passing yards with 4,159, and 11th in passer rating at 96.1, made a strong case for this extension.
Despite a rocky start to the season, Love rebounded strongly, leading the Packers to the playoffs and delivering a stellar wild-card game victory over the Cowboys. His final eight games of the regular season saw him complete 70.3% of his passes with a 112.7 passer rating, driving the Packers to a 6-2 finish.
Though Love faced some setbacks in the Divisional Round loss to the 49ers, including a couple of interceptions, the Packers remain confident in his potential. They view this extension as a step toward securing their quarterback position for the foreseeable future.
Heading into the 2024 season, Love will lead a promising young offense under the guidance of coach Matt LaFleur. If he continues to develop and perform at a high level, the Packers’ investment in Love could very well pay off, following a legacy of long-term contracts for franchise quarterbacks.
