Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is primed for a pivotal moment in its streaming journey as it gears up to leverage the Paris Olympics to boost its streaming platform, Max. Andrew Georgiou, president and managing director of WBD U.K. & Ireland and WBD Sports Europe, revealed in a recent discussion how this year’s Summer Games will play a crucial role in enhancing Max’s presence across Europe.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, the first since the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia, will be broadcast across 47 markets in 19 languages on Max and Discovery+, with TV coverage on Eurosport. This extensive reach is part of WBD’s strategy to solidify Max’s brand in the European market, where it is already active in 25 countries.

Georgiou emphasized the strategic importance of the Olympics in the company’s launch plans for Max. He noted that the Games will serve as a significant marker for the streaming service, following the success of “House of the Dragon.” The Olympics provide an opportunity to drive acquisition, engagement, and retention through an array of content and cross-promotional tactics.

One of the key elements in WBD’s strategy is utilizing the extensive Olympics coverage to promote other WBD brands. For instance, Max in France will highlight popular titles like “Barbie,” “Wonka,” and “Ocean’s Eleven” to attract viewers. This cross-promotion aims to enhance viewer engagement and subscription rates.

Additionally, Georgiou highlighted the role of digital innovations in enriching the viewing experience. With 3,800 hours of live competition and up to 54 simultaneous events, Max will employ advanced features to help viewers navigate the extensive coverage. This includes curated areas for specific countries and sports, timeline markers to highlight key moments, and real-time alerts for significant events like gold medal wins.

AI plays a critical role in these innovations. Timeline markers, which allow users to jump to significant moments in long events, are enhanced by AI for precision. Medal alerts and multi-audio feeds further personalize the experience, allowing users to switch languages and receive updates on gold medal events across various sports.

The integration of these features underscores WBD’s commitment to making Max the premier destination for Olympics coverage, distinguishing it from traditional linear TV and offering a more tailored viewing experience. Georgiou believes that Max’s digital platform, with its advanced tools and features, represents the optimal way to experience the Olympics, providing flexibility and personalization that traditional broadcasting cannot match.

In summary, the Paris Olympics are set to be a transformative event for Max, helping to drive its growth in Europe and set a new standard for sports streaming.
