A Philippine-flagged tanker carrying close to 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel has capsized and sunk off the coast of Manila, sparking fears of a significant environmental disaster due to an ensuing oil spill. The incident occurred amidst adverse weather conditions exacerbated by Typhoon Gaemi, which has recently caused widespread damage in Taiwan.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista confirmed that sixteen crew members of the MT Terra Nova have been rescued, while one crew member remains missing following the accident. Efforts to contain the oil spill have been hindered by strong winds and high waves, making it challenging for authorities to swiftly respond to the crisis.
The tanker was en route to the central Philippine city of Iloilo when it capsized and eventually submerged, according to a report by the coast guard. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the severe weather conditions played a role in the accident.
Philippine coast guard spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo expressed urgency in addressing the spill, highlighting the potential consequences if the entire cargo leaks into the sea. “There is a big danger that Manila will be affected, even the shoreline of Manila, if the fuel will leak, because it is within Manila Bay,” he stated during a briefing.
Manila Bay, where the tanker sank, is a critical area hosting busy shipping lanes and is surrounded by shopping malls, casino resorts, and fishing communities. The proximity of the spill to this densely populated and economically significant area underscores the urgency of containing the environmental impact.
This incident recalls previous environmental disasters in the Philippines caused by oil spills. In March 2023, an oil tanker carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel sank off Oriental Mindoro province, resulting in oil reaching nearby fishing villages and causing health concerns among residents and cleanup workers. Nearly two decades earlier, in a similar incident off Guimaras island province, an oil tanker leaked oil into heavy seas, causing extensive environmental damage.
Efforts are now focused on containing and mitigating the current spill to prevent further ecological damage and economic repercussions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating response efforts to minimize the impact on marine life, coastal communities, and the environment at large.
