Jerry Miller, the renowned guitarist and co-founder of Moby Grape, passed away suddenly on Saturday at the age of 81, as confirmed by his representative to People magazine. Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Miller embarked on his musical journey in the late 1950s, co-founding The Frantics before joining forces with fellow musicians to establish Moby Grape in San Francisco.

Miller’s influence extended through Moby Grape’s debut album in 1967, where he co-wrote notable tracks such as “8.05” and “Hey Grandma,” contributing to the band’s legacy. Despite the band’s ups and downs due to various challenges, including drug use and mental health issues among members, Moby Grape continued to release music and perform over several decades.

After a hiatus in the early 1970s, the band regrouped and maintained sporadic activity. However, Miller later focused on his solo career and collaborations with The Jerry Miller Band, marking a significant chapter in his musical journey. He is survived by his longtime partner, Jo Johnson.
