Venice Film Festival 2024: Opening Night Films Revealed for Horizons Sections

The 81st Venice International Film Festival has announced the opening night selections for its Horizons and Horizons Extra competition sections.

Italian director Valerio Mastandrea’s second feature, “Nonostante,” will kick off the Horizons competition on August 28. The film stars Valerio Mastandrea alongside Dolores Fonzi, portraying a man challenged by a disruptive fellow patient during his hospitalization.

In the Horizons Extra competition, Tim Fehlbaum’s historical thriller “September 5” is set to open on August 29. Starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Ben Chaplin, the film centers on a sports broadcasting team caught up in the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis orchestrated by Black September. Leonie Benesch also stars as part of the cast.

Produced by BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Projected Picture Works, with contributions from Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion, “September 5” delves into the intense events and their global repercussions.

Both films mark significant entries into the festival’s lineup, with “Nonostante” offering a personal narrative of disruption and resilience, while “September 5” explores a pivotal moment in modern history through a cinematic lens.
