During a recent podcast conversation with Shantanu Deshpande, founder of Bombay Shaving Company, Kapil Chopra, former president of Oberoi Group, shared an intriguing anecdote involving tech billionaire Michael Dell and the luxurious Oberoi Hotel in Gurgaon. The incident sheds light on the delicate balance hotels face between adhering to policies and ensuring guest satisfaction.
Chopra, who helmed Oberoi Group from 2013 to 2018, recounted an episode where Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, encountered an unexpected refusal for a late check-out. Despite Dell’s discreet request for a few additional hours in his room, the receptionist, unaware of his identity on her first day, adhered strictly to the hotel’s regulations.
“The country head of Dell and all the executives were on their phones, leaving Michael Dell alone in the lobby… he walks up quietly, in his unassuming way, to the front desk and asks if he can get a late check-out,” Chopra narrated.
The receptionist, citing hotel policy, explained, “Sir, check-out is until 12 pm. If you stay until 6 pm, it’s a half-day charge. If it’s post 6 pm, it’s a full-day charge.”
This incident resonated deeply with Dell, known for his principles, who decided to check out immediately, using the opportunity to set an example. Following this, Dell’s country head contacted Chopra, expressing surprise and a hint of frustration: “‘You could have charged us more. Why was Michael Dell refused? Now he wants to check out because he wants to set an example,'” Chopra recalled.
The story highlights the nuanced challenges hotels face in balancing policy adherence with guest expectations, especially in high-profile cases. Chopra’s anecdote serves as a reminder of the importance of flexibility and discretion in hospitality, ensuring every guest experience remains exceptional.
