In a surprising twist, Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly in early discussions to helm not just one. Still, the next two Avengers movies for Marvel Studios, exclusive sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

The move signifies a significant reunion for the Russo brothers with Marvel, where they previously directed some of the franchise’s most successful films, including the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame (2019). Their directorial prowess has collectively garnered over $6.681 billion in box office revenues from their Marvel projects, cementing their status as blockbuster kings.

After their Marvel tenure, the Russo brothers started producing under their AGBO banner, backing notable projects such as the acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once and major streaming hits like Netflix’s Extraction. However, their return to directing the fifth and sixth Avengers installments marks a pivotal moment in their careers.

The fifth Avengers film, originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, has undergone significant changes, including a new title and narrative focus following Marvel’s decision to sever ties with actor Jonathan Majors amidst legal issues. The storyline was set to feature Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang, with Destin Daniel Cretton initially attached to direct before his departure.

Meanwhile, the sixth installment, Avengers: Secret Wars, is a highly anticipated adaptation of the iconic comic book storyline. First introduced in the 1980s, Secret Wars promises to delve into Marvel’s multiverse saga, integrating elements previously hinted at in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
