Fans eagerly awaiting the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie got a closer look on Tuesday when the film’s second full-length trailer was released. The clip gave a fuller view of Chris Pratt’s voice performance as the iconic plumber and adventurer Mario, along with more time devoted to his brother Luigi (voiced by It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Charlie Day) and Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy).
The trailer opens in the middle of the action, as Mario emerges from the shadows to walk into an arena, where he walks across the middle of a thin platform suspended in the air. Initial reactions on social media to the new trailer were decidedly mixed, as fans complimented the impressively detailed computer-animated visuals while continuing to opine that Pratt was the ‘weakest link’ among the all-star cast, which has previously been critiqued for a lack of diversity.
The cartoonish gladiator jumps into the air for a power punch against Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogen), but his hopes for a triumphant victory are comically dashed when the gorilla slaps him down and starts pulverizing him. The intro gives a nice preview of the quality of the animation with a closeup of Mario’s hilariously pained expressions as he is pummeled by Donkey Kong. Meanwhile, Peach and Toad (Keegan–Michael Key) try to avert their eyes at the sight of their champion losing so dramatically.
‘Not sure if you know who I am, but I’m about to rule the world,’ Bowser says by way of introduction. ‘But there’s one problem,’ he continues as Mario is seen bouncing on mushrooms somewhere far away while chasing Toad. It becomes clear that Mario is on a quest at Peach’s behest when Bowser (Jack Black) makes a sinister appearance. The spiky-shelled evil tortoise terrorizes Luigi, who seems to have gotten separated from Mario, as he holds him captive in his claws.
‘There’s a human. He has a mustache… just like you,’ Bowser says as he tortures Luigi by tugging on one of his mustache hairs. ‘Do you think I know every human being with a mustache wearing an identical outfit with a hat with the letter of his first name on it!’ Luigi shouts back comically.
‘Because I don’t!’ he says just as Bowser yanks out the hair and he lets out a dramatic shriek. Bowser’s spooky floating castle is then seen floating toward Peach’s kingdom with plumes of smoke and flame surrounding it.
But not everyone is convinced, including one of the little toadstools, who interjects, ‘How? Look at us. We’re adorable!’ The trailer then gives a hint of its version of the classic Mario Bros. gameplay, as the title character has to jump over floating bricks and obstacles as part of his quest.
‘Bowser is coming!’ Peach warns in a conference of her advisors. ‘Together, we are going to stop that monster,’ she says confidently before changing out of her dress and into a pale pink jumpsuit while heading into battle with Toad at her side.
