Introduction: Spring Cleaning Made Fun
Spring has arrived, bringing with it the perfect opportunity to refresh your workspace! If your desk is currently overwhelmed by office supplies, crafting materials, and various tools, you’re not alone. I found myself in the same situation, buried under an avalanche of items. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a DIY Nesting Desk Organizer. This project is not only easy to make but also fully customizable to suit your style. Let’s dive into how you can create your own desk organizer that not only keeps everything tidy but also adds a touch of creativity to your space.
Why You Need a Nesting Desk Organizer
Decluttering Made Easy
A well-organized desk can significantly boost productivity and reduce stress. When your workspace is cluttered, it can be hard to focus on the tasks at hand. A nesting desk organizer helps you categorize and store your supplies efficiently, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Personalized Touch
One of the best parts about this DIY project is that it allows you to express your personal style. You can choose colors, sizes, and designs that reflect your aesthetic, making your workspace not just functional but also visually appealing.
What You’ll Need
Materials
To create your DIY Nesting Desk Organizer, gather the following materials:
- Basswood Panels: 1/16″ x 4″ x 24″ (or sizes based on your desired dimensions)
- Wooden Box or Tray: Look for one at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. The box I used measures 9″ x 6″ x 1.5″.
- Acrylic Paint: Choose your favorite colors for a personalized touch.
- Superglue
- Sandpaper
- X-Acto Knife
- Ruler
- Cutting Mat

Optional Supplies
- Paintbrushes: For applying acrylic paint.
- Clear Sealant: To protect your painted surfaces.
- Decorative Elements: Stickers, washi tape, or decals for added flair.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Measure and Plan
Before you start cutting wood, measure the dimensions of your wooden box. This will help you decide how big or small you want your nesting boxes to be. You can adjust the sizes based on your preferences. Here are the dimensions I used for my nesting boxes:

- Tall Box: 3″ x 4″ x 3″
- Long Box: 8.75″ x 1.5″ x 2.5″
- Medium Box: 5.5″ x 1.75″ x 3″
- Tiny Box: 2.25″ x 1.25″ x 1.5″
2. Cutting the Wood

Using your ruler, mark the measurements on the basswood panels. For the tall box, you’ll need to cut two pieces measuring 3″ x 4″ and two pieces measuring 2.75″ x 4″ for the sides. Finally, cut a 3″ x 3″ piece for the bottom.
When cutting the basswood, use an X-Acto knife. Lightly score the wood a few times along your marked lines; this will make cutting through much easier.
3. Assemble the Boxes

Once you’ve cut all your pieces, it’s time to assemble your boxes. If you’d like to paint the inside of your boxes, do that now before assembling. After the paint dries, use superglue to attach the sides together.
You’ll want to use a “butt joint,” where one piece of wood meets another at the edge. Allow each side to dry completely before moving on to the next step. To reinforce the hold, apply extra glue in the corners.
Finally, attach the bottom piece of your box. Make sure everything is securely glued and give it some time to dry.
4. Sand and Finish

After everything is dry, take your sandpaper and smooth out any rough edges. This not only gives your boxes a polished look but also ensures they’re safe to handle.
Once you’re satisfied with the finish, consider adding a layer of clear sealant to protect your painted surfaces. This will help your organizer withstand the wear and tear of daily use.
5. Personalize Your Organizer

Now comes the fun part—personalization! Use acrylic paint to add colors to your boxes. You can create patterns, use solid colors, or even apply decorative stickers or washi tape. This is where your creativity can shine. Make it uniquely yours!
6. Fill It Up

With your nesting desk organizer complete, it’s time to put it to good use! Consider using it to store:
- Washi tapes
- Ribbons
- Pens and markers
- Small notebooks
- Cacti or other desk plants
Having designated spaces for these items will help keep your desk clutter-free and make it easier to find what you need.
Conclusion: Your Desk, Your Way!
This DIY Nesting Desk Organizer is not just a project; it’s a solution for a more organized and aesthetically pleasing workspace. Not only does it help you declutter, but it also allows you to express your personality through design.
