Kevin Smith is set to bring his iconic 1999 film Dogma back to audiences as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The controversial religious satire, which has long been a staple of Smith’s View Askewniverse, is making a triumphant return to theaters and will be available for home release after new distribution rights were acquired from Miramax.

In an enthusiastic announcement on That Hashtag Show, Smith shared, “The movie’s been bought away from the guy that had it for years. We met with the new company, and they were like, ‘Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?’ I said, ‘100 percent! Are you kidding me?’” He’s clearly excited about the opportunity to revisit a film that holds deep sentimental value for both him and fans.

Smith confirmed that the re-release is planned for 2025, coinciding with the film’s November anniversary. “We’ll clean it up and get it ready,” he promised, indicating that fans can expect a polished version of the beloved classic. This marks the first time Dogma will be available to stream since its initial release, and physical copies of the film have become rare collectibles.

Dogma features a star-studded cast, including Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels on a mission to exploit a loophole that could allow them back into heaven. The film also stars Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, and Jason Mewes, along with Smith reprising his role as Jay.

The film is the fourth entry in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which includes hits like Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. With this new deal, Smith hinted at the possibility of extending the Dogma universe through sequels and even a TV series, something he’s been unable to explore until now.

Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Smith acknowledged the past controversies surrounding producer Harvey Weinstein. After Weinstein faced multiple sexual assault allegations in 2017, Smith expressed his shame for having worked with him and pledged to donate future residuals from all his Miramax projects to Women in Film.

As fans eagerly anticipate the return of Dogma, Smith’s passion for the project shines through, promising a nostalgic and meaningful experience for both longtime followers and new audiences alike.
