Michael Keaton, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in iconic films like “Beetlejuice” and “Batman,” is considering a return to his birth name, Michael Douglas, after more than five decades in the entertainment industry. The 73-year-old star has revealed that he plans to merge his stage name with his real name for future credits, aiming to be known as Michael Keaton Douglas.

Keaton, who celebrated his birthday on September 5, spoke candidly about the origin of his stage name in an interview with PEOPLE published on September 4. Reflecting on his early days in Hollywood, Keaton admitted that the decision to adopt the name “Michael Keaton” was somewhat arbitrary. “I was looking through—I can’t remember if it was a phone book,” he recalled. “I must’ve gone, ‘I don’t know, let me think of something here.’ And I went, ‘Oh, that sounds reasonable.’”

At the time, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) had already registered the name Michael Douglas, which belonged to the son of the legendary actor Kirk Douglas and the talk show host Mike Douglas. SAG rules prohibited actors from using names already in use by other members, which prompted Keaton to choose a different moniker.

The decision to go by “Michael Keaton” allowed the actor to carve out his own identity in the industry. However, now that he has achieved legendary status and is recognized worldwide, Keaton is ready to revisit his roots. He plans to use his original name alongside his stage name in future credits. “I said, ‘Hey, just as a warning, my credit is going to be Michael Keaton Douglas,’” Keaton shared about his upcoming film, “Knox Goes Away,” which he directed. “It totally got away from me. And I forgot to give them enough time to put it in and create that.”

Despite the delay in updating his credits, Keaton assured fans that the new name will eventually make its debut. “That will happen,” he promised. This decision marks a significant shift for the actor, who has been known as Michael Keaton throughout his illustrious career.

The choice to use a stage name was not unusual in the entertainment industry, but it carries a unique twist in Keaton’s case. During a 1992 press tour for “Batman Returns,” Keaton discussed the issue when interviewer Terry Wogan noted that he was using a different name. At the time, Keaton explained, “Because there were already two people in the union with the name Michael Douglas, I got a job, and contractually, you couldn’t have people with the same name.” He also revealed that when he finally met the Oscar-winning Michael Douglas, he found him to be a “good guy” and noted, “That’s not even his real name! I’m the only one who had the name. That’s the irony here.”

The actor Michael Douglas, known for his roles in films like “Fatal Attraction” and “Wall Street,” was actually born as Michael Douglas. His father, originally named Issur Danielovitch, Americanized his surname to assimilate into mainstream society. The use of the name “Michael Douglas” by the actor created a notable coincidence with Keaton’s own stage name.

Keaton’s decision to reintroduce his original name comes as he continues to enjoy a successful career. His recent projects, including directing and starring in “Knox Goes Away,” demonstrate his ongoing commitment to the craft. Keaton’s legacy includes memorable performances in both comedy and drama, solidifying his place as a Hollywood icon.

As Keaton prepares for this change, fans are eager to see how the blending of his stage name and real name will impact his future work. The dual name could serve as a symbolic bridge between his past and present, reflecting his journey from an aspiring actor with a borrowed name to a celebrated figure in the film industry.

With this move, Michael Keaton is not only reconnecting with his roots but also marking a new chapter in his illustrious career. The transition to Michael Keaton Douglas promises to be an exciting development for fans and industry insiders alike.
