The allegations stem from a clip of a CNN interview with Harris, in which she expressed concerns about the lack of oversight on social media platforms. Harris criticized these platforms for their ability to reach millions without adequate regulation, a stance she argued was necessary to prevent misinformation and harmful content.
Kennedy, who had previously run as an independent presidential candidate, shared the 2019 clip on X, misinterpreting Harris’ comments as a direct threat to platforms like X. He claimed that Harris’ statements indicated a desire to suppress free speech and enforce “government-approved narratives.” In a post on X, Kennedy stated, “Translation: If they don’t police content to conform to government-approved narratives, they will be shut down.” He further criticized Harris for her alleged stance on freedom of speech, asserting that it is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
Musk echoed Kennedy’s sentiments, accusing Harris of wanting to undermine free speech. He responded to the clip by saying, “This is what she actually believes. Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and the Democratic Party (Kamala is just a puppet) wants to destroy it.”
The 2019 CNN interview, however, presents a more nuanced picture. In the interview, Harris was critical of then-President Donald Trump’s use of Twitter, expressing concerns about its impact on public perception and the potential for inciting violence. She argued for consistent rules across social media platforms, emphasizing the need for responsibility and oversight to manage their influence effectively. Harris specifically mentioned the need for such oversight to address the power of these platforms, not to target individual companies or curtail free speech broadly.
