Three upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna, scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, have been cancelled following a serious security threat. The shows, part of Swift’s highly anticipated Eras tour, were to be held at the Ernst Happel Stadium, but organizers have taken precautionary measures after a potential terrorist plot was uncovered.

On Wednesday, Austrian authorities arrested two individuals suspected of planning Islamist attacks on large events in the Vienna area. The arrests were part of a broader investigation into radicalization linked to online extremist groups. According to Franz Ruf, Austria’s General Director for Public Security, a 19-year-old Austrian was detained in Ternitz, Lower Austria, while a second suspect was arrested in Vienna later in the day. The 19-year-old had reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS earlier this year.

The authorities discovered chemical substances during a search of the 19-year-old’s home, which are currently being analyzed. In light of these developments, officials confirmed a credible threat targeting the Ernst Happel Stadium, prompting the cancellation of the concerts to ensure public safety.

A statement from the event organizers read: “Due to confirmation by government officials of a planned terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three planned shows for everyone’s safety. All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 working days.”

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer acknowledged the disappointment this decision would bring to fans but emphasized the severity of the threat and the successful preventive measures taken by security agencies. “Thanks to the intensive cooperation of our police and security services with international partners, we identified and neutralized the threat in time,” Nehammer said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The Vienna police chief, Gerhard Pürstl, noted that approximately 65,000 attendees were expected daily, with an additional 22,000 fans anticipated outside the stadium.

Molly Surette from Leeds, UK, had eagerly awaited Saturday’s show and was preparing friendship bracelets to exchange with fellow fans. She expressed her disappointment upon hearing the cancellation news but remained relieved that safety was prioritized. “There’s been so much anticipation for this concert. It’s heartbreaking to miss out, but I’m grateful that everyone’s safety comes first,” Surette told the BBC.

The investigation into the threat is ongoing, with authorities continuing to assess the situation and ensure public safety.
