Charles Barkley has decided to shelve his retirement plans and extend his tenure with TNT Sports, signaling his intention to stay with the network for the remainder of his 10-year contract.
The NBA Hall of Famer and co-host of TNT’s “Inside the NBA” had previously announced in June that the upcoming year would be his final on television, amid uncertainty over the future of the NBA’s broadcast rights with TNT. However, in a recent statement, Barkley reversed his decision, expressing his enthusiasm for continuing his role with TNT.
“This is the only place for me,” Barkley said in his statement. “I have to say … I’ve been impressed by the leadership team who is fighting hard and has been aggressive in adding new properties to TNT Sports, which I am very excited about.”
Barkley’s announcement comes as Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of TNT Sports, is involved in a legal battle with the NBA. The company is challenging the league’s decision to reject its offer and accept a $1.8 billion annual bid from Amazon to stream NBA games.
Luis Silberwasser, Chairman and CEO of TNT Sports, praised Barkley’s decision, calling him “one of the best and most beloved sportscasters in the history of television.” Silberwasser expressed excitement about the future, noting the expansion of TNT Sports’ portfolio with new properties like the College Football Playoffs, Roland-Garros, NASCAR, and others.
The decision to stay with TNT could also reflect WBD’s confidence in its ongoing lawsuit against the NBA or a strategic move to maintain its sports broadcasting edge as media rivals like NBCUniversal, Disney, and Amazon explore new opportunities.
Barkley, who has been a central figure on “Inside the NBA” alongside Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal, will continue his role as the network strengthens its live sports offerings. TNT Sports has recently secured a 10-year deal for the French Open starting in 2025 and a five-year agreement with ESPN for College Football Playoff games.
The move ensures that Barkley will remain a prominent voice in sports broadcasting, contributing to TNT’s future sports content and programming.
