Carrie Fisher’s legendary gold bikini from “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” has fetched a remarkable $175,000 (nearly ₹1.5 crore) at auction. The costume, which became one of the most recognizable outfits in film history, was sold by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, amidst a two-day event featuring over 500 pieces of Hollywood memorabilia.
The seven-piece ensemble includes the distinctive bikini, hip rings, an armlet, and a bracelet, all designed to represent Princess Leia’s captivity by Jabba the Hutt. This costume, celebrated by fans and known for its cultural impact, was meticulously crafted based on sketches by costume designer Nilo Rodis-Jamero and made using resin and urethane by sculptor Richard Miller.
In a behind-the-scenes documentary, Miller shared that the design aimed to symbolize Leia’s character evolution throughout the Star Wars trilogy. Director George Lucas’s intent was to showcase Leia’s development through this revealing outfit, which contrasted sharply with her previous attire.
Despite its iconic status, Fisher was not entirely comfortable with the costume. In a 2016 NPR interview, she revealed her unease, describing the bikini as “nearly naked” and expressing her discomfort with the outfit, which was not her personal choice. Fisher had to sit very rigidly to avoid creases, as the design did not fit perfectly due to her weight loss by the time of filming.
