Former NFL wideout Nate Burleson believes Tom Brady should have retired prior to this season, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner not reaching his lofty standards thus far in 2022. The Buccaneers have started just 3-5 this season and the team’s offense  led by Brady of course  has looked out of sync.

While the 45-year-old briefly called it quits during the offseason only to quickly reverse his decision  Burleson believes it’s a decision he should’ve stuck with.  ‘Tom should’ve retired. Am I the only one thinking it?,’ he asked on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

Tampa Bay has scored just 18.3 points per contest (23rd) in the league and Brady has tossed more than one touchdown in just one game as the Bucs have dropped three straight games. Brady has also had to deal with off-the-field issues he and wife Gisele Bundchen announced this week that they’ve finalized divorce.

‘Here’s the thing: we’ve been praising Tom Brady for 20 years and said that he’s the GOAT, the greatest quarterback that ever played, put him in the conversation with the greats across all of sports. It’s OK to have some criticism.’

It was even reported at the beginning of the season by NFL Network that this was to be Brady’s last season, though he seemed to recently contradict that. ‘I said last week that there’s no immediate retirement in my future. There was a retirement in the past, but I moved on from that,’ Brady said on his SiriusXM radio show.

Brady’s difficult start to the season continued Thursday night vs. the Ravens, as Tampa Bay were unable to capitalize on a 10-3 halftime lead and went on to lose 27-22. It’s been a hugely underwhelming year for the the legendary quarterback, who as far back as Week 1 was saying the Bucs offense had ‘a lot to clean up.’

‘I made a commitment to this team, and I love this team, and I love this organization. I told them in March I was playing, and I’ve never quit on anything in my life.’Despite an enviable group of skill position players on the Bucs, injuries to the offensive line have stunted the group, while it also appears that Father Time is simply catching up with the veteran signal-caller.

‘It’s a combination of things,’ Burleson said of Brady. ‘The rhythm isn’t there. The juice isn’t there. And he just doesn’t look like the Tom Brady of old — he looks like an older Tom Brady.’ Brady and the Bucs are off this weekend after their Thursday night loss to the Ravens and things won’t get much easier when they host the Rams next weekend.
