New ‘Monkey B Virus’ detected to be the cause of a human death in China

China has reported a death caused by human infection via a new virus called ‘Monkey B Virus’. The person who was infected with the virus was a vet surgeon. The vet got infected in March when he was performing dissection on two dead monkeys who were carrying the virus.

The vet was 53-years old and started to reveal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting after a month of contracting the virus. Two months later, he began experiencing high fever and neurological symptoms. The doctor succumbed to the virus on May 27 after he failed to get appropriate treatment in various hospitals. Researchers had gathered samples of cerebrospinal fluid from the infected vet in mid-April to begin with next-generation sequencing. The symptoms were indicative of a probable alphaherpesvirus infection. They also gathered samples of blood, nasal and throat swab, plasma, blister fluid, etc. from the infected vet to identify the factors responsible for the growth of the virus. After grouping, the samples were shipped off the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention (IVDC) of China’s CDC. The institute recognized BV, aricella-zoster contamination (VZV), monkeypox disease and orthopoxvirus.
