The Block couple Sarah-Jane and Tom have revealed their heartbreak after being forced to miss their daughter Cleo’s first steps due to their filming schedule. The Melbourne couple left their daughter Cleo, one, with Sarah-Jane’s mother in Melbourne while they embarked on their ambitious renovation in country Victoria.

‘It was a very real fear for me that she’d forget us, which was heartbreaking,’ she said. Tom added that competing on The Block was worth it because they could stand to win $100,000 in prize money as well as extra cash from selling their house.

‘We missed Cleo’s first birthday and her first steps,’ Sarah-Jane, 30, told New Idea on Monday.  Sarah-Jane also revealed Cleo said ‘mum’ for the first time to her grandmother, rather than her own mother.

‘We missed Cleo’s first birthday and her first steps,’ Sarah-Jane told New Idea on Tuesday. ‘It was tough but we have the rest of our lives to spend with Cleo,’ Tom said. ‘We just had to keep reminding ourselves why we were there, and that if we win, we are giving our daughter the best possible start in life.’

The couple have become fan favourites on the Channel Nine show thanks to their straight-talking attitude.‘It was a very real fear for me that she’d forget us, which was heartbreaking,’ Sarah-Jane said.

‘I mean… love Sharon, love Anks, but this is… crap,’ Sarah-Jane said bluntly. Tom did not entirely agree with this assessment, but did say he wasn’t impressed at all by Sharon and Ankur’s fireplace.

Sarah-Jane and Tom continue to make waves on the show, having taken aim at bedroom winners Sharon and Ankur on Monday night’s episode. The outspoken pair, who have been strong contenders so far this season, threw shade at the successful team as they toured their room.

He questioned whether the feature was fit for purpose, remarking sarcastically: ‘So that’s just called a “place” [because] it’s not a fireplace.’ Sharon and Ankur took out the top spot after using their bonus-point gnome, narrowly beating Dylan and Jenny by half a point.
