Elon Musk’s Shift: From Biden Supporter to Trump’s Biggest Cheerleader

Elon Musk, the tech mogul behind Tesla and SpaceX, has always been known for his unpredictable political stances. Once a supporter of Joe Biden in the 2020 U.S. election, Musk has now become one of Donald Trump’s biggest cheerleaders. So, how did this transformation happen? What triggered Musk to go from a critic of Trump to his most vocal backer, and why has his relationship with Biden soured so dramatically?

Musk’s Early Political Support: Biden Over Trump

In both the 2016 and 2020 elections, Elon Musk backed Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden over Donald Trump. Musk, who often described himself as “half Democrat, half Republican,” seemed to favor more centrist policies. However, as Biden’s presidency unfolded, Musk’s views began to change, and his political support for Biden became increasingly strained.

The Rising Tensions with Joe Biden

Musk’s growing dissatisfaction with the Biden administration became clear in 2021 when Tesla was excluded from a White House summit on electric vehicles (EVs), despite the company selling the majority of EVs in the United States. This exclusion was a turning point for Musk, and he didn’t hold back in voicing his displeasure.

In a now-infamous tweet, Musk mocked Biden for not congratulating SpaceX on its all-civilian spaceflight mission, saying, “He’s still sleeping.” Musk also criticized Biden’s pro-union stance, suggesting it hindered progress, and called the Democratic Party “the party of division & hate.” By 2022, Musk publicly declared he would be switching his allegiance to the Republican Party.

From Trump Critic to Trump Supporter

Interestingly, Musk wasn’t always a Trump fan. In 2016, Musk openly criticized Trump, claiming he wasn’t the right man for the presidency. Musk even warned that Trump’s presidency would bring too much chaos, calling it a “bull in a china shop” situation.

However, over time, Musk’s relationship with Trump softened, especially after Musk purchased Twitter (now X) and reinstated Trump’s account. Musk described his decision as a “difficult choice,” but his stance evolved further following a 2024 rally attack on Trump.

The Turning Point: Trump’s Assassination Attempt and Musk’s Full Endorsement

Musk’s support for Trump became even more evident after the attempted assassination of the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania. Hours after the attack, Musk posted on Twitter: “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”

Musk’s vocal support continued as Trump returned to Pennsylvania for another rally. This time, Musk showed up wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap and warned voters that if Trump lost, it could mark the end of American democracy. Musk even went so far as to claim that if Kamala Harris won the election, she would “shut down X and throw him in jail” for supporting Trump.

Musk’s Current Stance: Trump’s Clear Victory

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election nears, Musk’s stance is clear. On Twitter, he declared that Trump had won the election, writing, “The people of America gave Donald Trump a crystal clear mandate for change tonight.”

Musk’s journey from supporting Biden to passionately backing Trump has been one of the most dramatic shifts in modern political discourse. With Biden’s policies no longer aligning with Musk’s vision for the future, Musk has become one of Trump’s loudest and most visible supporters—something few could have predicted just a few years ago.
