Ka, the celebrated Brooklyn rapper and dedicated 9/11 first responder, has tragically passed away at the age of 52. Born Kaseem Ryan, he left us unexpectedly on October 12, a loss that resonates deeply within the music community and beyond.
In a heartfelt message shared on his social media, his family announced, “We are heartbroken to share the passing of Kaseem Ryan (1972-2024), the rapper and producer known as Ka. He lived a life of service to his city, community, and music. A 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, Ka bravely responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center, rising to the rank of fire captain. He leaves behind a powerful legacy through his art, with eleven self-released albums that showcase his talent and dedication.”
Hailing from Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka began his musical journey in the early 1990s as part of the group Natural Elements. After stepping away from the collective, he formed the duo Nightbreed with fellow artist Kev. It wasn’t until 2008 that he released his first solo album, Iron Works, launching a prolific career that culminated in his latest project, The Thief Next to Jesus, released in August 2024.
Known for his philosophical lyrics and minimalist production style, Ka embodied an independent ethos that set him apart in the hip-hop scene. He also collaborated on notable projects, including Days With Dr. Yen Lo (2015) and Orpheus vs. The Sirens (2018) alongside Animoss. His artistry was a reflection of his life experiences, including a brief hiatus from music to serve as a firefighter, where he found balance and purpose.
In a 2013 interview, Ka shared, “I have a full-time job, and I work all the time… But I love my job because it gives me the freedom to do the art.” This dedication to both his community and his craft resonated with many, even amidst controversy—he faced scrutiny in 2016 when the New York Post portrayed him as an anti-police figure living a dual life.
Following the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from fellow artists, with producer Alchemist expressing, “The truest man and artist I have ever been lucky enough to cross paths with. It was an honor to call you a friend and comrade.”
