For instance, former trust and safety team members noted that management often resisted efforts to implement safety measures. They reported that many complaints about grooming and sextortion were not acted upon. In one alarming case, an account remained active despite receiving 75 separate reports related to “nudes, minors, and extortion.”
What is Sextortion?
Sextortion involves convincing someone to share explicit photos and then threatening to release them unless they pay money or engage in sexual favors. It’s a serious issue, and according to the lawsuit, Snapchat was aware of its prevalence on their platform but failed to inform parents and young users about it.
A Flood of Reports
According to internal emails, Snapchat received about 10,000 user reports of sextortion each month. One employee expressed deep concern, stating, “If this is correct, we have an incredibly concerning issue on our hands.” Another employee highlighted that these reports likely represent only a small portion of the actual incidents, as many users may feel too embarrassed to report their experiences.
Snapchat’s Response
In response to the allegations, Snap defended its platform, claiming it includes “built-in safety guardrails” and that the company is continuously working to improve its safety measures. They argue that they have taken steps to prevent minors from being discovered by strangers on their service and are collaborating with law enforcement to combat these issues.
