Australia Launches World’s First Peanut Allergy Immunotherapy for Infants

Australia has taken a groundbreaking step in the treatment of peanut allergies by initiating the world’s first oral immunotherapy sessions for infants under 12 months. This innovative program, implemented by the National Allergy Centre of Excellence (NACE), will be rolled out across five states, providing access to treatment outside of clinical trials for the first time.

Peanut allergies can lead to severe and potentially fatal reactions, making effective treatment essential. The new therapy aims to change how peanut allergies, the most prevalent food allergy among Australian children, are managed. Professor Kirsten Perrett, director of NACE, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Ultimately, we want to change the trajectory of allergic disease in Australia so that more children can go to school without the risk of a life-threatening peanut reaction.”

Oral immunotherapy involves administering carefully measured doses of peanut powder to infants over time. As the treatment progresses, the children will reach a “maintenance dose,” which they will continue for two years. After this period, the effectiveness of the therapy will be evaluated to determine if the allergy has been mitigated.

Peanut allergies occur when the body mistakenly identifies peanuts or peanut-containing foods as harmful, leading to an immune response. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include rashes, vomiting, hives, swelling, sneezing, asthma attacks, abdominal pain, and in extreme cases, cardiac arrest.

This new approach to peanut allergy treatment marks a significant advancement in allergy management, as there has been no widely available treatment option until now. NACE hopes to extend the immunotherapy program to more regions in Australia as its effectiveness becomes evident.

With this pioneering initiative, Australia is setting a new standard in the fight against food allergies, potentially transforming the lives of countless children and their families by reducing the risks associated with peanut consumption.
